Information for schools

Working with schools

Reading Quest works in a number of schools in order to boost literacy levels. Our core tutors work alongside school staff in selecting pupils who need some extra help to get going on the path to literacy.

Our tutors are specially trained and help each child explore a tailor-made programme. Each child has a 1-1 half-hour lesson in school three times a week for 6 weeks. Progress is tracked and results are impressive. Children make, on average, 7 months progress in reading and 5 months in spelling during the programme.

Our present work in East Oxford and Cowley is generously funded by a five-year Big Lottery Fund, which started in 2010.

Who is it for?

Children are usually put forward for Reading Quest by their class teachers if they are making a slower-than-expected start in learning to read.

  • Most are aged 6 or 7.
  • Some lack confidence or motivation as learners.
  • Many don’t speak English at home.
  • Some don’t get much support from their parents.
  • Some live in care.
  • A few have learning difficulties.

  • It tackles the whole issues about what reading is for, Reading Quest has an impact on class straightaway. It also gets in parents who are normally far too busy to come into school.
